Whether your refer to links pointing to your site as backlinks, back links or BL it makes no difference. Backlinks are the number of links that are pointing to your site that the search engines have registered. However, actually measuring the links the search engines have registered is an elusive process, especially when it comes to Google. At any one time, Google will never display all the links it is finding. In fact, it will only display a very small portion of the actual back links pointing to a website. For a more accurate read, you should use Yahoo to get a clearer picture, but even Yahoo (like Google) only displays a maximum of 999 links.
